Welcome to the dog page of our website....Meet some of the Brightside dogs, in the last 12 months we have rescued 25 dogs, some have stayed with us many have found loving homes.
Paddy
Paddy is a Lurcher, a greyhound x deerhound with a dash of sheep dog in the mix. He is the most wonderful and happy dog and he is the sanctuary clown!
He and his brothers and sister was found tied up to trees in the bush. It appears they had been there for many months as their backs and legs were weak and their joints stiff and totally inflexible. Their backs were very arched and tucked up.
The dogs diet had been so poor that Paddy will always have physical problems. They weighed between 5 and 9 kg each but should have weighed 15 to 20kg each. Their bones felt as though they were about to cut through the skin on their wasted little bodies. They were the most emaciated animals I have ever seen.
The dogs had been removed by the RSPCA but were considered not rehomable. The RSPCA shelter kindly agreed to let us take 5 of the pups who were about 9 months old and have a go at rehabilitating them. For the first 3 weeks they put on 3kg a week each and ate like they had never eaten before. Thank you to our major supporter Dogs Breakfast for the donation of top quality dog food. www.dogsbreakfastonline.com
All of the pups recovered beautifully and have gone to loving homes, all come back to Brightside for visits with their brother Paddy who will be at Brightside for life.

Daisy
Daisy is a rescued ex racing greyhound The racing life of a greyhound is over by the time they reach 2-4 years of age. Some 20,000 greyhounds are destroyed in Australia each year in the name of entertainment and gambling.
Daisy went from one disqualified trainer to another. At one point she weighed only 16kg when she should have weighed 26-28 kg. We took her in with 3 other greyhounds all from the same disqualified trainer. We fostered three and re homed them when they were safe with other animals, Daisy stayed with us. Her lifetime ordeal is finally over and she can live in peace at the sanctuary. She is a very gentle and peaceful dog and is great with all the animals.
Minnie
Minnie was the saddest little dog I had ever seen. She came from a puppy-breeding factory farm and had been used as a breeding bitch along with over 400 other female dogs. She was terrified of people and her coat was completely matted and full of grass seeds. The mats even covered her eyes and filled her ears. She had ear mites in her ears and grass seeds penetrating her gums. Minnie suffered from terrible psychological damage and took a long time to recover. (two and a half years)She had never had a bed to sleep on or a decent kennel. Her conditions were always squalid. She is, I am glad to say, now enjoying late but everlasting puppy hood, making up for lost early years. If ever there was a dog to convince anyone to adopt a shelter dog rather than going to a pet shop or breeder it is Minnie. We love her dearly.
Lochie
Lochie is a very special dog. He was a hard working sheepdog on a large property until he was run over. He was taken to a vet clinic but the owner decided on euthanasia as his leg needed to be amputated and he did not want a three legged dog.
I convinced the owner to surrender him to me and I paid his vet bill for his leg removal and bought him to Brightside. Lochie knew from the minute he set eyes on me that he was in luck. His tail thumped constantly despite his pain and his huge sad eyes stared up at me. We removed his leg and the next day he ran out of the surgery and jumped straight into my car with out a word from me. I will always wonder how he knew. Maybe he just decided.
Angie
Angie is another permanant resident of Brightside. Because of the emotional scars she has we feel she is not re homeable. She is one of 11 Pekignese we rescued from some one who was unable to look after the large number of animals that had been acquired over time.
The dogs had not received veterinary care and were in a shocking state. They had bi lateral ear infections, ear mites, extensive dental problems, eye problems and their coats were matted and soaked in urine and covered in faeces.
Some of the dogs had been living in a shed and some were in crates full of faeces. All bar one were terrified of people and some it seems always will be.
The vet said they were one of the worst cases of cruelty he had ever seen.
After veterinary care and some rehabilitation the dogs found loving homes. They are all settled and happy and well loved.

Sasha
Sasha is a very special dog.We found her in a tiny pen full of faeces in a back yard where she had spent it seems her 12 or so years of life.
Her owners told me they were going to have her destroyed as she could not walk. They had never taken her to a ve and she had never had her toenails trimmed or had a hard surface to wear them down. They were growing in a full circle and inside the pads of her feet.
After a good trim she was bouncing around and now has a loving home where I can safely say she is adored.
