Brightside has taken in and rescued a number of unwanted ponies and mini horses. Some have been terribly neglected others just mis understood by well meaning people who knew very little about keeping ponies. We have 14 permanant pony residents, you can meet some of them below.

Alice

Alice came to Brightside with a body score of one out of ten. The vet thought she may well die. When we found her she was covered in blow flies and had the saddest eyes I think I have ever seen.

We have had her nearly a year, she is now so happy and one of our herd of 14 rescued ponies. Alice will never have to leave the safety of Brightside.

Mac

Mac was about to be destroyed, his owners could not manage him even though he is only a small pony. The hole had even been dug so he really was out of luck.

His owners had been told by a horse handler that he was dangerous but the truth is he was just very much misunderstood.

Mac was very nervous, very smart and new how to get what he wanted. Anyway on arriving at Brightside he has been an angel letting us trim his feet with out so much as a sideways glance.

Scooter

Scooter was rescued from a lonely life. He was an only pony, and at the time of his rescue was living enclosed in a dark, damp shed. Some days he had no food or water.

Thanks to a neighbour´s encouragement, the owner agreed to let him go to us and we quickly whisked him away to his new life where he joined the herd at Brightside.

His neglected feet are now healthy and he clearly loves his newfound life and friends and freedom.

Moonlight and Breeze

Moonlight (left)  was very neglected she had foundered so badly she was unable to walk and her feet were so over grown it took several trims to get them right as they had started to curl upwards. She did not like children  when she arrived here but now she is friendly to every one.

Breeze (right) was to be shot. He was a stallion and not wanted. We bought him to Brightside and he is now a gelding he now trusts humans and is relaxed in the herd which includes 4 ponies that came to us as stallion.

Bob and Jelly Bean

Bob (left) and Jelly Bean (right) were both destined for the dog meat man the day after we were told of their fate. Again both stallions they were  unwanted.

Bob has been well cared for, in fact some one had spent money having the vet remove his damaged eye. He had been used for breeding but had apparently become a nuisence so was being sent for pet meat.

Jelly bean had been given very little hands on attention and was greatly mis understood by his owners. They said he was not able to be handled but he is actually a perfect little angel as you can see by his dear little face.

Felicity and Luigi

Felicity (left) came to Brightside with Alice, we could not leave her behind. Although she has obviously had alot of handling she was terrified of people, I suspect some one had beel cruel to her and she had been used for a brood mare for some years. She is still nervous but is happy, a little more independant than the rest of the herd.

Luigi (right and below) is the most recent addition to Brightside´s pony herd and one of the sweetest natured ponies I have met. Although he was very much loved Luigi was the most long suffering animal I have come across and had been in severe pain for many years.

He was unable to walk when he came here and was completely crippled from long term founder.

His hooves had been so badly trimmed that the heels were as long as the toe meaning he stood on "block" heels. He was in a constant muck sweat from the pain.

We have been working with Luigi for some time now not sure if we could save him but determined to give it our best shot. He is showing signs of recovery, he can walk now although a little stiffly. I can not thank John and Jill from Pegasus Tooth and Hoof enough. They have been here every Saturday for months to work on his feet and were initially coming twice a week. Thank you both so much for caring about his recovery.
